You’ve seen a photograph or painting of a place and knew you had to go there, haven’t you? For me, one of those places was the Pont du Gard in southern France (first image above). That bridge – an structure dating back to Roman times that combined a bridge for foot and mule traffic with an aqueduct for transporting water about the empire – grabbed my attention and wouldn’t let go until I went there. It took me about four years from the first time I saw the photograph in a Fodor book, but I got there! The surprise bonus was how wonderful the air smelled there!
