Tree graffitti

Who would think that such deep scars could look so striking? All over the western United States, the aspen trees are marked with graffitti. Some of it is human-made, some of it is from wild animals (think BEARS!), and some of it is just collateral damage. While sometimes hazardous for the well-being of the tree, the marks turn into thick black scars that are often interesting, if not beautiful.
Of course, initials are most commonly found when people have been busy carving into trees, but apparently drawings were carved into them as well. I just haven’t seen any yet!
Depending who you talk to, these drawings are called glyphs of one kind or another: silvaglyphs, dendroglphys or aborglyphs.
